“Ican'tsaythankyouenough,”WintersaidyesterdayatanewsconferencemarkingthetenthanniversaryoftheMultiOrganTransplantprogramatTorontoGeneralHospital.
WhatWinterknowsofthe19-year-oldwhosavedhislifeisonlythathediedinacaraccidentandthathisfamilywaswillingtohonourhiswishesanddonatehisorgansfortransplantation.
Hisliver(肝脏)wenttoWinter,whowasdyingfromlivertrouble.“NotadaygoesbythatIdon'tthinkofwhatapainfulthingitmusthavebeenforthem,”Wintersaidyesterday.
“Theyarevery,veryspecialpeople.”
Winter,63,isfitternowthanhewas10yearsago,whenhegotthetransplant.Hehasfivemedalsfromthe1995WorldTransplantGamesinswimmingandhopestocollectsomemorenextyearinJapan.
“Atonetime,wewereprobablystrangepeopleintheeyesofotherpeople.Nowit'sexpectedyoushouldbeabletogobackanddoeverythingyoudidbefore,onlybetter.”
ThebiggestchangeforWinter,however,isn'tthathehasbecomeacompetitiveathlete.Thebiggestchangeishowdeeplyheappreciateseverylittlethingabouthislifenow.
“Ihavenotimeforarguments,”saidWinter.
“Youchangeeverything.Materialthingsdon'tmeanasmuch.Friendshipsmeanalot.”
Alsoatyesterday'snewsconferencewasDrGrayLevy,Winter'sdoctor.
Levysaidhehasbitter-sweetfeelingswhenhelooksatWinterandhearsofhisathleticexploits.
Levyknowsthatforeveryrecipient(接受者)likeWinter,thereareseveralotherswhodieeventhoughtheycouldbesavedbecausetherearen'tenoughdonatedorgans.
“ForeveryMrWinter,wehavefivetotenpeoplethatwillneverbegiventhechancethatMrWinterwasgiven,”Levysaid.
Levysaidgreaterpublicawarenessandmoreresourcesareneeded.HenotedthatinSpainandtheUnitedStates,hospitalsreceive$10,000perdonortocoverthecostsoftheoperatingroom,doctors,nursesandteamstoworkwiththedonors'families.
