BisselisasmallvillageoftheWestSahara.Itliesnexttoal.5-square-kilometeroasis(绿洲)fromwherethreedaysandnightsaregenerallyrequiredtogooutofthedesert.HoweverbeforeKenLevindiscovereditin1926noneoftheBisselvillagershadeverwalkedoutofthedesert.Reportedlytheywerenotunwillingtoleavethisbarrenland.Manyhadpreviouslytriedbutfailedalwayssomehowfindingthemselvesbackattheoasisafterseveraldaysoftryingtowalkout.
WheninterviewedbyKenLevinanexpertattheBritishRoyalCollegeofSciencesthevillagersexplainedthatnomatterwhichdirectiontheywalkeditalwaysbroughtthembacktothevillage.Whycouldn’ttheBisselvillagerswalkoutofthedesert?Levinwasverypuzzled.Hehadbyhimselfmanagedtowalknorthfromthevillageandreachthenearesttowninthreeandahalfdays.Hedecidedtocarryoutanexperimenttosolvethemystery.HeandaBisselvillagercalledArgutelwouldwalkoutofthedeserttogether.Theypreparedenoughwaterforahalf-a-monthjourneyandtwocamels.ButthistimeKenLevindidn'tbringhiscompass.LevinwouldfollowArgutel.
Tendayslatertheyhadwalkedforabout500milesbutwerestillinthedesert.Onthe11thmorninganoasiscameintotheirview.TheywerebackatBissel.LevinnowunderstoodwhytheBisselpeoplecouldn’tescapethedesert.TheyhadnoknowledgeoftheNorthStarwhichhadforcenturiesprovidedsailorsandothertravelerswithapointofdirection.Inthedesertifapersongoesforwardrelyingonlyontheirsensestheywillnotbeabletotravelinastraightline.Rathertheywilltravelinaverylargecircleandeventuallytrackbacktowheretheybegan.LevinexplainedtoArgutelthefunctionoftheNorthStarandsaid“Aslongasyourestinthedaytimeandwalktowardsthebrighteststaratnightyouwouldbeabletowalkoutofthedesert.”Arguteldidashewastold.Threedayslaterhecametotheedgeofthedesert.
