Voice,thatis,thehumanvoice,isaninstrumentinitsownright.Asingergeneratessoundswhenairflowfromthelungssetsthevocalcordsintooscillation.Thefundamentalfrequencyiscontrolledbythetensionofthevocalcordsandthetonequalitybytheformationofthevocaltract;awiderangeofsoundscanbecreated.
Stringinstrumentsgenerateasoundwhenthestringisplucked,strummed,slapped,etc.Thefrequencyofthewavegenerated(andthereforethenoteproduced)usuallydependsonthelengthofthevibratingportionofthestring,itslineardensity(massperunitlengthofstring),thetensionofeachstringandthepointatwhichthestringisexcited;thetonequalityvarieswiththeconstructionoftheresonatingcavity.Examples:guitars,violinsandsitars.
