Ithinkmy1startedwhenIwasatPalomarCollege.Atfirst,Ijustwantedtogetmydegreeandbeleftalone.IthoughtIwassmarterthaneveryoneelse,soIhardlyevertalkedtoanyoneinmyclasses.Bytheendofmyfirstsemester,IwasreallylonelyItseemedasifeveryonebutmehadmadefriendsandwashavingfun.Sotrieda(n)experime.Istartedaskingpeoplearoundmehowtheyweredoing,andiftheywerehavingtroubleI43tohelp.Thatwasreallyabig44forme.Bytheendoftheyear,Ihadseveralnewfriends,andtwoofthemarestillmybestfriendstoday.
Abiggercauseofmynewattitu,however,camewhenItookapart-timejobataVistaNursingHome.OneoldladytherewhohadAlzheimer’sdiseasebecamemyfriend.EverytimeIcameintoherroom,shewassohappybecauseshethoughtIwasherdaughter.Herrealdaughternevervisitedher,soItookherplace.Sheletmesee.thatmakingothersfeelgoodmakemefeelgood,too,whenshedied,Iwashearthbroken,butIwasverygratefultoher.
IthinkIamamuchbetterpersontodaythanIusedtobe,andIhopeIwillnotforgettheseexperiences.Theyhavetaughtmetocareaboutotherpeoplemorethanaboutmyself.IlikewhoIamtoday,andIcouldnotsaythatafewyearsago.
