1.OutstandingProjectManagersInspireaSharedTeamVision
Whileitmaybecommonsensetomost鈥foraprojecttowork,everybodyneedstohavethesamevisionforwhereexactlytheprojectisgoing.Greatprojectmanagershelpallteammembersfeelliketheyhaveanequalstakeinaproject,andempowereveryonetoshareandexperiencethegroup鈥檚vision.
2.OutstandingProjectManagershaveGreatCommunicationSkills
Asaprojectmanager,communicatingwithdifferenttypesofstakeholderscanbetrickyattimes.Whenitcomestocommunicatingwithclientsversusteammembersversuscorporateleadership,itcanbecomedownrightdifficult.Projectmanagersneedtoclearlycommunicategoals,performance,andexpectations;andtheyneedtomanagefeedbackcomingatthemfromalldirections.Beingaccessible,open,anddirectiscriticalforbeingagoodcommunicator.
3.OutstandingProjectManagershaveIntegrity
Aprojectmanager鈥檚actionssetthemodusoperandifortheteam.Goodleadershiprequirescommitmentandadherencetoethicalpractices.Yes,projectsmustbeprofitable;andyes,therearemanywaystoensureprojectmanagerstaketheircorporateinterestsintoaccountwhileservingtheclient.However,greatprojectmanagersabidebyethicalstandardsandrewardingthoseteammemberswhofollowsuitispartoftheresponsibilityofthejob.Projectmanagementshouldneverbemotivatedbyself-interest;ratheritistheinterestoftheproject鈥檚successthatmattersmost.
4.OutstandingProjectManagersareEnthusiastic
Negativeleaderscanbearealpitfalltothesuccessofaprojectandtheoveralleffectivenessofateam.Greatprojectmanagershaveabounceintheirstepandacan-doattitudethatsetsthepacefortheirentireteam.Havinggoodenergy(withoutbeingannoying)iscriticaltosettingapositiveexampleanddemeanorfortheteam.Projectmanagerswhoarepositivelycommittedtogoals鈥evenwhenthingsgowrong鈥willhelpinspireotherstonotbecomenegativewhentheprojecthitsadelayorsnag.
5.OutstandingProjectManagersshowEmpathy,NotSympathy
Empathyandsympathyaretwodifferentthings.Sympathyisusuallyprojected,whileempathymeanstrulyunderstandinghowtheotherpersonfeels,especiallywhenitcomestothingswhichinvolvesalifeoutsideofwork.Sometimesempathyneedstobeshowntowardsteammemberswhoarestrugglingtocopebecauseofwhateveroutsideinfluencesmightbeaffectingtheirwork.Assuch,astrongprojectmanagerwillempathizewiththeteammember鈥檚issueswithoutshowingremorse(whereappropriate).Doingsoensuresteammemberscanremainproductiveontheproject,withoutexacerbatinganypersonalissuestheymaybegoingthrough.
6.OutstandingProjectManagersareviewedasCompetentintheSubjectMatteroftheProject
Teammembersneedtofeelliketheirprojectmanagerhassomedegreeofexpertiseintheproject鈥檚subjectmatter
